Another snicker for the Infinite Jest

At least David Foster Wallace didn’t microwave his own head.

Every time I read something like this, I wonder what it takes to make someone happy who has the talent knob cranked up to eleven. “The light that burns twice as bright burns half as long” indeed.

I’m sure its a factor that the more brilliant you are, the more absolutely you know how incurably fucked up things are. All fake humility aside, I know firsthand how much closer you live to the edge, sweating over whether you make a difference and whether the difference you’re making counts for anything. You ride the redline, balancing the smell of burning transmission fluid against the smell of burning tires, praying hardest, praying always for a little more traction.

Because giving it a little less gas is never an option.

Thank God for bourbon. But I’m mysteriously out of bourbon. So thank God for gin instead.

I don’t believe you’ve found peace, David. But I hope I’m wrong.
